Why so serious?

Why so serious Zurich? Isn’t life too short for that? What if you loosened up a bit, let go and had more fun?

What is your obsession with perfection about? What if you failed? For example, your trains were late? Everything would be more chaotic, yes. And what if your banks didn’t make so much money? Everything would be less safe, yes. So what?

What if your people started interfering with each other’s lives; there were gossip and drama? What if they started showing up at each other’s doors without prior appointment? Everything would be less private and more emotional, yes. Would you not survive? Are you afraid of feeling too much perhaps? Feelings are tricky business, you might lose control. Would that be so bad?

I don’t want to make comparisons because everyone is unique and there is a reason for that. Yet, there are also other possibilities, you know? Just in case you might consider.

Take Buenos Aires. You know, she suffers. Most likely she doesn’t have one tenth of the money you have, nor the safety you provide. Yet, she never stops smiling. In fact, she often throws a belly-full, wholehearted laugh, so much so that tears come out of her eyes. She plays with life knowing that everything is transient. We will all die. Not sure if you noticed, but we are getting one step closer to death every single day. Why not enjoy a little more while we are still around?

Then there is her sister Barcelona, she is a tiny bit more like you. She can also be too serious sometimes. She is a bit more structured, after all she was born in Europe. But the sea takes care of it. The sound of the waves, the smell of salty water, the glitters of sunshine gently tell her people to relax. Life is too beautiful to be too serious.

Buenos Aires and Barcelona; so perfectly imperfect and so alive. Life is too short to fix everything, there is no time. Even if we did, then what? What is all this perfection about? Please help me understand.

I see a hidden beauty in the scratches and cracks, they tell a story. Something has happened, someone has felt, someone has lived. Don’t you also think a plain, white, freshly fabricated porcelain is boring? Let’s break it and look at all the small, different shapes it takes on. Isn’t it more playful?

What do you think Zurich, might you give it a try? Loosen up a bit, let go, fall down a few times, get some scratches, get up, live and have a little more fun?

  1. Great post. Your comparison and description of the cities is refreshing! Southern places seem always more alive and the people more spontaneous and lively. We Northern Europeans seem to be a bit more sober and (want to be) in control…I think…

    1. Thank you.
      It is a bit of self-talk 😊
I am southerner in my essence and force-transformed myself into a northerner. I also enjoyed it but now it is enough. I am returning to my essence, I am trying, it’s a process 😊
